UNIT 7. The animal kingdom

7.1. VERTEBRATE ANIMALS

General characteristics of vertebrates:

  1. Internal skeleton made of bones. The main axis is the spinal column.
  2. Bilateral symmetry.
  3. Body: head, trunk and tail; articulated limbs.
  4. Nervous system: brain, spinal cord and nerves.
  5. Sexual reproduction.
  6. Five classes: mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians and fish.
MAMMALS
  • Habitat: terrestrial (most of them)
  • Carnivores, herbivores and omnivores
  • Many glands: sweat, sebaceous and mammary
  • Skin: hair or fur
  • Four limbs
  • Lips and teeth
  • External ears
  • Homeothermic

REPTILES
  • Habitat: terrestrial
  • Carnivores (testudines: herbivores)
  • Skin: hard scales (testudines: carapace)
  • Four limbs (except ophidia)
  • Poikilothermic
  • Oviparous
